Why Regular Dental Cleanings Matter at Every Age

By Dr. Metri

Brushing and flossing at home are the foundation of a healthy smile, but they are only part of the picture. No matter how careful your daily routine is, plaque that isn't removed eventually hardens into tartar — a substance no toothbrush can clean away. That is where professional dental cleanings come in. At Fadi R Metri & Associates, we recommend cleanings every six months for most patients, and sometimes more often for those managing gum disease or other ongoing concerns.

Cleanings remove what your toothbrush can’t

Even the most thorough at-home care leaves behind small amounts of plaque in the spots that are hardest to reach — behind the lower front teeth, around the back molars, and just under the gumline. Within about 24 to 72 hours, that plaque begins to calcify into tartar. Once tartar forms, it can only be removed with specialized dental instruments. Left in place, it constantly irritates the gums and creates a rough surface that makes it even easier for new plaque to stick.

During a cleaning, our hygienist gently removes tartar from above and below the gumline, then polishes the teeth to smooth the enamel. That polished surface is more resistant to new buildup between visits.

Early detection saves teeth — and money

A cleaning appointment is also an opportunity for a thorough exam. We check for early signs of decay, hairline cracks, worn restorations, oral cancer, and gum recession. Catching a small cavity when it is still barely visible on an X-ray means a simple filling instead of a root canal or crown later on. In dentistry, problems never get smaller on their own — they only get more complex and more expensive to fix.

What changes at different stages of life

Childhood and the teen years

Kids and teenagers are still developing the habits and dexterity to clean well on their own. Regular cleanings reinforce good technique, and sealants placed on newly erupted molars can dramatically reduce the risk of cavities during the cavity-prone years.

Adulthood

For most adults, the main threats are gum disease and wear. Cleanings every six months keep inflammation in check and give us a chance to monitor old fillings, crowns, and any shifting in your bite.

Senior years

As we age, gums may recede and dry mouth (often a side effect of medications) becomes more common. Both make the roots of the teeth more vulnerable to decay. More frequent cleanings, along with fluoride treatments, can help protect exposed root surfaces and keep existing restorations in good shape.

It’s never too late to get back on schedule

If it has been a while since your last cleaning, you are not alone — and there is no need to feel embarrassed. We see patients every day who are returning to care after a long gap, and our team is here to make the visit comfortable and judgment-free. Whether you are due for a routine cleaning or it has been years, we would love to help you protect your smile for the long haul.
